Bring your own keys

Why we don't sell credits

Your first 3 videos run on ReelMint's own keys — no key needed to start. After that: your keys, provider prices, zero markup, nothing expires. Most AI video tools resell usage as “credits” — bundled into the subscription, capped monthly, often model-gated on cheap tiers. ReelMint just isn't in that business.

What does “bring your own keys” (BYOK) mean in AI video?

BYOK (bring your own keys) means you connect your own API keys for Gemini, OpenAI, or ElevenLabs to a video tool, and the AI provider bills you directly at list priceinstead of the tool reselling that usage as bundled “credits.” Your keys are encrypted at rest in your workspace and never proxied or marked up — the provider's invoice is the only bill for AI usage. There is nothing to buy in advance and nothing that expires unused, unlike monthly credit quotas that on some apps don't roll over. ReelMint additionally gives every new workspace its first 3 videos free on ReelMint's own keys (no card, within 7 days) before BYOK applies. After that, the honest range for a Short's AI usage is roughly $0.02–$0.52, with a sweet spot around $0.06–$0.18on the default Gemini stack — rendering, publishing, and editing run on ReelMint's own infrastructure at no charge, included in the free founding-creator pilot.

Every AI call a Short needs — the script, the scene images, the narration — runs on an API key you hold, encrypted at rest in your workspace. Google, OpenAI, and ElevenLabs bill you directly, at the same list price any developer pays. We never see a markup on that usage, because there isn't one. Rendering, publishing, and editing are the parts ReelMint actually builds, and those run on our infrastructure at no charge, included in the free founding-creator pilot.

That $0.02–$0.52 range is not a rounded marketing number; it is the same math the calculator below runs live, from provider list prices we re-verify against their published pricing.

Credits vs BYOK

Same category of tool, two different pricing mechanics. Credit-based apps we checked in July 2026 ran $17–$88/month for entry-to-mid tiers (promos rotate — check current pages), with monthly credit quotas.

Questions

BYOK, asked directly

What keys do I need?

None, for your first 3 videos — those run on ReelMint's own keys (scripts, images, narration), no card. After that, just one to continue: a Gemini API key. Script generation has a free tier; scene images and narration are billed per-unit from the first call — pennies per Short at list price, and the calculator above shows the exact math. Add OpenAI or ElevenLabs keys later if you want a different script model or voice.

Do you mark up API calls?

No. Your keys call Gemini, OpenAI, or ElevenLabs directly from your workspace — ReelMint never proxies, bundles, or resells that usage. The provider bills you at their own list price; our markup is exactly $0.

What happens if I stop paying a provider?

Your account, projects, and published videos stay exactly as they are — nothing gets deleted or locked. Generation that depends on that specific provider pauses until you add a valid key again; everything else in the studio keeps working.

Why is this cheaper than credit apps?

Credit apps carry the AI inference bill themselves, so the subscription has to cover it — bundled into credits, with monthly quotas that on some apps don't roll over. BYOK removes that layer: you pay each provider's list price for exactly what you generate, and rendering, publishing, and editing run on ReelMint's own infrastructure at no charge during the pilot. The calculator above shows the real per-Short math instead of asking you to trust a credit conversion rate.
